Paper Strip Pumpkin
Oct 8th, 2011 by Craftylocks

This wee pumpkin was such fun to make. This technique is easy to turn into all sorts of different fruits and vegetables too.

You need an empty toilet roll or roll of cardboard, some sheets of orange, brown, yellow and green paper, brown pencil or crayon, and scissors and glue stick

Cut the toilet roll a bit shorter. Roughly scribble over the orange, brown and yellow paper with the brown crayon.

Coat the outside of the cardboard roll in glue.

This next bit was a bit of a challenge as it required thinking backwards and inside out! With the scribble side up, roll the orange sheet of paper around the cardboard roll. Glue the overlap in place but just along the length of the cardboard roll, not all the way up the sheet of paper.

Repeat with the yellow and then the brown sheets of paper remembering to coat each layer with glue the width of the cardboard roll. You should end up with what looks like a plain brown roll. Leave to dry for a bit. I staggered the edges so that I did not end up with too many layers in one place.

Using your scissors, cut 1cm strips through all the layers of paper and down to the cardboard roll.

Spread glue liberally around the inside edge of the toilet roll and peel back each strip of brown paper and glue it in place. Try to glue the strips so they create the skeleton of a circle. Leave to dry for a few minutes.

Repeat the process for the yellow and orange layers, remembering to apply glue to the inside edge of the cardboard roll between layers.

You should end up with a lovely pumpkin shape that has the brown scribbles showing.

Finally, roll the green A4 sheet of paper into a tube narrower than the cardboard roll. Pop it through the off-cut of cardboard roll and let is spring out. Glue one edge 6cm up the tube of paper to secure. Flatten the other end and roughly cut into a leaf shape.

Pop into the center of your pumpkin and then curl the leaves to suit.

Earthquake
Feb 23rd, 2011 by Craftylocks

Due to the recent earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, we were off-line for a few days.

We are back on-line and are OK, unlike many others in our beautiful city. We are picking up all the normal parts of our life – we are again making stuff, laughing, dancing to loud music (much easier now we have power) and generally getting on with life. We are also appreciating such wonderful things as a roof, running tap water and being able to have lights on when it gets dark.

Enough on that, on with paper crafts for children.

After the Earthquake
Sep 5th, 2010 by Craftylocks

A rapid and effective response from the authorities after our huge earthquake.

It felt as though before the initial quake had even stopped, that rescue teams from around New Zealand converged on Christchurch to search the rubble for victims. Fortunately there were none buried but I am glad they did not wait to find out before arriving!

The national radio station was providing a calm and helpful commentary straight after the quake. The national telephone company immediately made all public phones free of charge.

Dairy companies worked with the council and tanked in water for those who have no water supply. Trucks are set up at stations around the town. Port-a-loo’s have been positioned in streets that are not able to use their sewage.

All this is on top of the emergency shelters that were set up straight away for those who have lost their homes. Nurses and doctors with damaged and destroyed houses have still gone to work.

Neighbors are caring for neighbors, as they do everywhere when this sort of thing happens. Other cities around the country have already raised funds to help us with our rebuilding. Apparently the US airforce was ready to come and assist if needed! It is reassuring to know that folk around the world want to help.

Their is so much support at all levels. Skilled people are making making themselves available and organizations stepping in to assist those in need of advise, a roof, food, or just a shoulder to cry on.

Everyone knows what they should do and where to go for help. Dangerous areas have been assessed and cordoned off, and repairs have started within 48 hours of the quake!

The robustness of our building codes and the strengthening of many of our historic buildings has saved many many structures and so many lives. I am relieved at how lucky we are, but oh I wish all the after-shocks would stop!
