Tissue Paper Collage
May 23rd, 2010 by Craftylocks

Tissue paper is a great paper for children to craft with!

tissue-paper-collage1Tissue paper comes in lot of lovely colors and is so much fun to tear and scrunch and layer. With this craft the children will sandwich the tissue paper between two bits of clear contact plastic to create a collage that can be used in so many different ways. To appreciate the transparency of the tissue paper use the collaged images to attach to windows or as a mobile in the children’s room. However this technique can also be used to make bookmarks or inserts for gift cards.

To create the collage you need some contact plastic – sometimes called ‘coverseal’, it is clear plastic that is sticky on one side. I cut out a piece twice the size of my planned collage and folded it in half. I pulled off the protective paper and arranged my tissue paper on one side of the contact plastic. Then I closed the other side over to seal the tissue paper in.

The basic technique is pretty simple but I did have some issues with it, and it did not work as nicely as I hoped every time, sometimes bits of tissue would move and jump as I sealed the plastic. That is what happened with the final example here. The plastic also rarely sealed without wrinkles. I do not think that a big problem though. I also think that with practice and more care than I took it would work better. But I am interested in how easy it is for children, who like me, would not be interested in lots of practice or fiddling around to get it to work. All that said, I still think it is worth doing!
